Framlingham Castle

The ruins date from the 12th Century, after Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, restored damage and added to it after Henry III ordered its destruction 1177. It became the seat of the Mowbray family and later the Howards, dukes of Norfolk. In 1636 it was given to Pembroke College, Cambridge and the great hall and other buildings were gradually pulled down, the poorhouse lasted for 200 years after which it was used as a court.

The Framlingham Castle is 18 miles northeast of Ipswich, on B119 off the A12.

Orford Castle

Built between 1166 and 1172 by Henry II as part of his coastal defence. After the death of King John the French contender took it to the crown, Prince Louis. In the reign of Henry III the castle changed hands frequently and then maintained by the Crown but by 1336 its importance had declined and given to Robert of Ufford.

The Orford Castle is 12 miles east of Woodbridge.
